The Right Work for You

Capability is not the same as current functional capacity.

The Right Work for You is an evidence-informed workforce inclusion and progression approach for organisations. It helps people recognise and evidence capability developed across employment, self-employment, caring, education, disability, health-related interruption, community participation and lived experience. Powered by the Contextual Capability Framework.

The central question

Under what conditions can this person contribute?

Recruitment and progression systems tend to ask whether someone can currently do a role as it is presently designed. The Right Work for You asks a different question — one that makes capability visible alongside the conditions, adjustments and patterns under which it is reliably available.

Pathways

Four workforce pathways

01

NHS Returners

Supporting people returning after illness, disability, caring responsibilities or career interruption.

Proposed pilot application

02

Disabled People and People with Long-Term Conditions

Recognising capability that fluctuates, and the conditions and adjustments under which it is reliably available.

Proposed pilot application

03

Adults Aged 50+

Making visible decades of capability built across employment, self-employment, caring and community roles.

04

Young People Who Are NEET

Evidencing capability developed outside formal employment and qualifications, and the support that sustains it.

The workforce problem

Capable people are screened out before the conversation begins

  • Capability built through caring, self-employment, volunteering or community roles is rarely recognised in recruitment.
  • Health-related interruption is read as a gap rather than as a period in which capability was developed or maintained.
  • Fluctuating capacity is treated as unreliability, rather than as something that can be planned for.
  • Adjustments are discussed late, defensively, and often after a decision has already been made.
  • Organisations lose experienced people while reporting persistent vacancies and skills shortages.

How it works

A structured, person-owned journey

Participants are guided through a structured process that helps them recognise, articulate and evidence capability developed across work and life. The journey also identifies the conditions that enable sustainable contribution and supports realistic next-step planning.

Recognise capability

Participants identify transferable capability developed across work, self-employment, caring, education, community roles and lived experience.

Build credible evidence

Concrete examples and artefacts are chosen and worded by the person, ready for progression and workplace conversations.

Identify enabling conditions

The adjustments, patterns and environments under which capability is reliably available are made explicit.

Plan sustainable progression

Reflection supports realistic next-step planning that respects the person’s circumstances and ambitions.

The output

A practical, person-owned profile

The participant receives a practical, person-owned profile that can support reflection, development and better-quality workplace or progression conversations. The detailed profile structure and methodology are available only through a private demonstration.

Delivery

Self-directed, supported or blended

Self-directed

The person works through the journey independently at their own pace.

Supported

A trained supporter or practitioner works alongside the person.

Blended

Independent work combined with scheduled supported sessions or group work.

Ethics

Ethical safeguards and user control

  • The person owns their profile and decides what is shared, and with whom
  • Nothing is shared with an employer or organisation without explicit, specific consent
  • No diagnosis, health disclosure or condition label is required to take part
  • Participation is voluntary and can be paused or withdrawn at any point
  • Language is strengths-based and avoids deficit framing
  • Organisations receive only what the person has chosen to share

Access

Accessibility and digital-plus delivery

  • Keyboard-accessible, screen-reader friendly interfaces with clear focus states
  • Plain-language content with adjustable pace and no timed tasks
  • Mobile-first design for people without regular access to a computer
  • Digital-plus delivery: printable materials and supported or in-person sessions alongside the platform
  • Options for supporters, advocates or family members to assist where the person wishes

Pilots

Potential pilot outcomes

  • Participants able to articulate and evidence capability more confidently
  • Better-quality conversations between candidates, managers and recruiters
  • Clearer information about the conditions under which people can contribute
  • Insight for organisations into where inclusive practice can be strengthened
  • Learning about acceptability, accessibility and feasibility across pathways

These are potential outcomes to be tested through pilot work and independent evaluation. They are not claims of demonstrated effect.

Commissioning

Organisation commissioning and tailoring options

  • Pathway selection and cohort size agreed with the organisation
  • Tailored language, sectors and role families
  • Choice of self-directed, supported or blended delivery
  • Supporter and manager briefing sessions
  • Aggregate, anonymised reporting agreed in advance
  • Independent evaluation designed alongside the pilot

Scope and limits

What The Right Work for You does not do

The platform does not determine fitness for work, benefit entitlement, regulated professional competence or suitability for a particular role. It is not a clinical tool, an assessment of health, or a decision-making system.

For NHS returners, The Right Work for You complements rather than replaces formal professional return-to-practice requirements, regulatory processes and employer recruitment decisions.

The Right Work for You is an innovation in development. It is not clinically validated, commissioned, NHS-approved or proven.

Demonstration

Invitation-only demonstration access

The working prototype is not publicly available. A secure demonstration link is issued by invitation only, to named individuals, for a limited period.
