Menopause training for managers: what employers need to know
Line managers are often the first person an employee talks to about menopause. Confident, informed managers make the difference between a supportive workplace and a lost colleague.
Why managers matter
Perimenopause and menopause can affect sleep, concentration, energy, mood and physical comfort. Most people continue working well with the right understanding and practical adjustments, but many find it difficult to raise the subject. A manager who knows how to start a respectful conversation, and what support is available, can help someone stay well and stay in work.
What good menopause training covers
- A clear, non-clinical understanding of perimenopause and menopause and how symptoms can vary.
- How to hold a private, supportive conversation and respect confidentiality.
- Practical workplace adjustments, such as flexible working, temperature control, breaks and reviewing workload.
- Your organisation's policy, and where to signpost employees for occupational health, HR or wellbeing support.
- Awareness of employers' legal duties, including equality and health and safety responsibilities.
Moving from awareness to action
Training works best when it is part of a wider approach: a clear policy, accessible support for employees and a way of checking whether it is making a difference. Larger employers are also being encouraged to set out menopause support in equality action plans, so it helps to have evidence of what you offer.
